I recently saw a quote that said, “toxic thinking wears down the brain.”
That immediately rang true to me, and I quickly recalled moments where I thought negatively about myself and couldn't let it go. Are you familiar with this habit? Over my almost 48 years of life, there have been too many times that I said to myself, You are so stupid, how could you do that or say that? Nobody cares what you have to say. Bad hair day...again. Why bother buying new clothes, you should lose that extra weight first. Who do you think you are?
I could go on, but why? I feel yucky writing it out, and I'm sure you don't feel great reading it! The result of all of those thoughts includes not sharing my feelings, not forgiving myself, blaming someone else for how I feel or what's happening to me, being irritable, lack of patience, inability to see the good that is all around me, holding on to the past, holding on to judgments, holding back in life and understanding my purpose, and probably the biggest one - worrying about what others think of me. Any of this sounding familiar at all?
So here's the million dollar question: If that kind of thinking wears our brains and spirits down, WHY do we do it? WHY is it so easy to do? WHY does it feel so difficult to choose to be positive? WHY can't we just change in an instant?
Growing up in an active Christian home with a firm belief in God and the healing power of Jesus Christ, I asked myself those exact questions many times over the years. I wondered why I didn't seem to have FULL access to that divine healing power. Don't get me wrong - I experienced glimpses of it, powerful glimpses. But I always had an underlying feeling that I was missing something.
When I was introduced to the idea of energy work/energy healing many years ago, I was the most skeptical person I knew. However, I finally got to a point of pain that made me open enough to be curious, and then open enough to give it a very skeptical try.
What I began to understand was that my ability to choose to have better thoughts was completely being sabotaged by what science has discovered is our subconscious belief system. In fact, Bruce Lipton has scientifically proven that about 95% our life experiences are dictated by our subconscious belief system - a belief system that is pretty much formed by age five!
You might ask, how does God fit into THAT? I can share what I have come to understand over the years and maybe it will speak to you. I feel that our subconscious belief system is like an umbrella that we hold up that blocks us from the abundance that God is always pouring down on us. I used to believe that blessings, abundance, and things "working out" were being withheld from me because I wasn't making wise choices, or that my innate worth just wasn’t good enough. That couldn't be further from the truth. As I began to experience energy work, I learned that I had some pretty deep beliefs that I wasn't worthy and deserving of goodness. This false belief system that told me I wasn’t good enough had a powerful enough effect to prevent me from feeling a connection to God. Those beliefs kept me from receiving all the good that He was pouring down on me, no matter how much I believed that He would bless me. Not only did those belief systems affect my spiritual experience, it affected every single part of my life - every relationship, how I feel about myself and others, how I show up and what my habits and patterns are.
So, what now? Now you ask yourself the question that I asked myself several years ago: do I keep doing what I'm doing, hoping for different results? Or, do I decide to take a chance on something different?
